My First Book Reading!

Writing can be such a lonely endeavor. When writing Fortune Favors The Brave, I spent nearly five weeks alone (in one-week increments), away from family, friends, WiFi, and even cell service! I got to know myself deeper and made peace with some of the hard parts of my life story. I often felt like I was writing to myself, as I explored my younger thoughts and naïve world views from an older, wiser place.

Once I'd written the book, I had the sense of being done, of having fulfilled promises and potential. It was such an accomplished feeling! But as the months of editing dragged on (as I was also healing a broken leg), and the publicity ramped up, it dawned on me that finishing the book was only the beginning of this journey. Now I have to represent my words publicly. It is time to step out of my sweat pants and into something fresh and writerly, to own my story, come what may.

This past weekend, we held the first of more than thirty speaking events this year. I decided to start my book touring in the place that I live, raise my children, and call home. Bucerias, Nayarit, Mexico. We gathered in a local literary haunt, Gringo's Books & Coffee, which has been slinging used books around the Bay of Banderas for nearly twenty years. My family and friends packed in to hear me read, standing room only, engaging in a deep and meaningful conversation around themes in the book.

It was all a new author could ask for and the perfect way to kick off the publicity side of this whole author gig. And it was Leap Day 2020, so I will always have a clear way of remembering it.

Thanks to all those who came out, and I hope to see many more of you along the way! Check out the "Book Tour" link above to stay up to date on events along the tour.
